Dog Grooming Tips to Keep Your Pet Looking Their Best

There is more to being a good dog owner than providing your pet good food and shelter. Dogs also need proper hygiene to keep them away from diseases and keep them looking great. Aside from giving your beloved pet a regular bath, there are still more things you can do to keep your pet looking well-groomed. Here are some dog grooming tips to keep your pet looking beautiful and healthy.

Bath Them Regularly

One of the basic steps in keeping your pet clean is by giving them a regular bath. Choose pet health product that doesn’t contain harmful ingredients to keep your dog safe while bathing. Pick products that suit your dog’s needs such as anti-tick and flea shampoo if your dog is suffering from these pests. Aside from keeping your dog clean, bathing also makes your dog’s coat look healthier and more beautiful.

Brush Their Coats

Aside from bathing them regularly, it is also recommended that you brush your pet’s coat regularly to keep their fur and skin clean and healthy. Brushing detangles your dog’s fur and prevents matts from forming. For short-haired dogs, a regular brush is enough. However, if you have a long-haired one, be sure to comb its fur gently using a metal comb to detangle and reach down to the skin to avoid matting.

Brushing and Caring for their Teeth

Dogs need their teeth to be brushed at least once a day to keep it healthy and clean. Use a soft bristled toothbrush and doggie toothpaste and gently scrub all the surfaces of your pet’s teeth to remove dirt build up and lessen bacteria that can cause decay. If your pet is not a big fan of tooth brushing, you can still keep those pearly whites healthy by using dental sprays or special chew treats. Doggie toothpastes are specially formulated and safe to be swallowed by your dog so you don’t have to worry.

Trim Their Nails

Some dogs grow their nails fast while others can take more than a month before they need a trimming. Nail trimming are often offered at pet clinics and grooming centres. However, if it’s still too far for your dog’s next visit, you can trim their nails at home especially when they aren’t comfortable with it anymore.

Clean Ears Regularly

Ear wax accumulates on your pet’s ears over time. Be sure to perform a scheduled ear cleaning at least once a month to keep their ears clean and prevent infections. If your dog has heavier or longer ears than more frequent cleaning is necessary. You can use a cotton swab with ear cleaning formula and start cleaning from the outside parts down into the deeper folds of your pet’s ears. Be gentle in cleaning and avoid going very deep into the ear canal.

You don’t have to wait for your scheduled appointment to get your dog clean. Grooming your pet is actually a great way to care and bond with your beloved dog.
